 Opening Remarks by the Minister As the year 2006 draws to a close, during this season of thanks, the "A-ha Hakka Arts Festival" will once again take center stage in all its creative splendor.
The "A-ha Hakka Arts Festival" not only opens up a new stage for top-flight Hakka artists, at the same time it raises the visibility of Hakka art itself. In addition to its traditional backdrop, the Festival includes many new creative elements working together. For the performance that will take place in front of the MeiNung Hakka Cultural Center on the evening of November 11, we have invited international environmentalist musician Matthew Lien through his moving music to convey the unique Hakka "new perspective"; on November 18 in front of the Luo Family Residence in Chiatung there will be a performance of a traditional Hakka opera. On November 25 at the Fengshan Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall there will be Hakka singing and a rare performance of a Hakka musical play. Fans of popular Hakka music can gather in front of the music center on the bank of Kaohsiung's Love River and join the dance party and experience the electrified sounds of Hakka popular music in a carnival atmosphere.
Last year internationally known Hakka violinist Lin Cho-liang with the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra staged An Evening of Hakka Music at the National Concert Hall to enthusiastic response. This year Another Evening of Hakka Music will be part of an evening banquet given for the people of southern Taiwan. There will also be three performances by "Cho-liang Lin & International Sejong Soloists--Hakka, Tango, Four Seasons." Add to this the British super popular acappella group, the "King's Singers," composed of six men who will sing Hakka songs, and the beautiful ideal of music without borders finds its realization here. No matter how brilliant or unsurpassed the performances may be, they all need the encouragement and the applause of the viewing public. The "2006 A-ha Hakka Arts Festival," presenting more than 30 rich and diverse cultural programs whose performers will be taking to the stage with great enthusiasm, wholeheartedly invites you to come and give three cheers for Hakka culture! To take the development of the Hakka Arts Festival to the next level, to promote Hakka culture through the use of elegant artistic language, making it more accessible and more familiar to the public, the Council for Hakka Affairs began the "A-ha Hakka Arts Festival" in 2003. This will be the Festival's fourth year. In addition to displaying their creativity using traditional Hakka cultural elements, outstanding cultural groups are being invited to use modern music and performance styles to come up with spectacular and diverse programs displaying an elegance that will leave people marveling at Hakka music, opera, dance and popular culture.
In addition this year the Council has recruited eight outstanding traditional Hakka opera troupes. Beginning in October, eleven traditional operas will tour throughout the country giving continuous performances. This year's new production by the Junghsing Hakka Tea-picking Opera Troupe, The Legend of Luo Fang-po, will give ten performances and put on stage the story of the legendary Hakka, Luo Fang-po, who during the Qing dynasty hoped to set up a country in Borneo. The opera depicts the steadfast pioneering spirit of Hakka people in foreign lands, their feelings about ethnic cohesion and their attitude toward sharing equally with local peoples so that others will come to know and understand this story.
