Five-year theater program
Since its creation, the Council for Hakka Affairs has made unreserved efforts to promote Hakka culture and initial effects are already noticeable. It has also accumulated quite a few achievements in the study and preservation, spread and display, and succession and development of various cultural issues. However, in the area of Hakka arts, there is still plenty of room for further endeavors.
For this, the council made plans to begin in 2004 to enhance the promotion of different categories of arts by infusing them in the daily life of people to upgrade the level of Hakka culture. In addition to placing emphasis on both Hakka traditions and their modern practicality, it set the target to extend the vitality and influence of Hakka culture to rid of the past stereotypical impression of “Hakka” as belonging only to a specific ethnic group and give its minority status a new interpretation.
As one of the many arts projects, this one was set to focus on Hakka theater and make it a key objective. Theater has always been an important recreation for people. It combines folk customs, religions, anthropology and sociology to become a general art form. It also contains many points of interest for exploration. Due to the rich contents and practical influence of theater, this project was designed to particularize the key points of execution according to the short-, mid- and long-term targets within a period of five years (2004~2008). By observing the past development and present status of theater, the project would also sketch out its path of evolvement to increase the accuracy of prediction for the feasibility of future strategies with the attempt to also find solutions for certain difficulties.
Aside from demonstrating the cultural characteristics of theater itself, the strategies would also include the possibility of interchange with other categories of arts – to be carried out under the principle of balance between theory and reality, technology and tradition, academic learning and skills, and planning and execution, so that in the process of integration the various inter-complementary cultural assets could provide one another with stimulation and cooperation.
