Hard-neck Photography Group

Chinese name:  硬頸攝影群
Year of Establishment: 1991

The Miaoli-based photography group was established by eleven funding members of Miaoli Photo (苗栗縣攝影學會) to pursue their ideal of documenting Miaoli faithfully through black and white photography. Comprising of Miaoli-born photographers from different generations and ethnicities, the organization seeks to raise awareness of Hakka culture, society, and villages.

Spanning photos of sea, mountain, farms, country roads, forests, and people, the photographers document the northern county of Miaoli as well as tell stories of the Hakka through the lens, showing their observations and care for people and things in their hometown. Many of their works show the vitality and hard-working image of Hakka women, shedding light on the everyday life of Hakka people in Miaoli from a faithful perspective.

Since its establishment, the group had held numerous exhibitions in Taiwan and
countries including France and Japan, offering glimpses into the history of early Hakka settlements in Miaoli as well as Hakka culture, traditions, and landscapes through photographic images.
